Introduction

This Sampler is designed for students who are starting to learn about fractions.

The purpose of this Web page is to let you explore fractions using different shapes. This sampler contains two sites:

1. NLVM: The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives provides an opportunity to practice identifying fractions using different shapes. Note: The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives site works best with Internet Explorer.

2. AAA Math: AAA Math provides skill practice with identifying fourths fractions by looking at squares.


Internet Activities

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - Fractions Visualizing

Activity:
  1. Use the arrow buttons to divide the picture into the number of parts specified as the fraction's denominator.
  2. Click on the parts to highlight the number specified for the numerator. Click Check to check your work.
  3. Click New Whole to try a new fraction. Please try at least 10 problems.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - Fractions Naming

Activity:
  1. Count the number of colored parts in the picture. Enter that number as the numerator in the fraction.
  2. Count the total number of parts in the picutre and enter that as the denominator. Click Check to see if you are right.
  3. Click New Fraction to try another fraction. Please try at least 10 problems.

AAA Math

Activity:
  1. Read about fractions in the red section of this page.
  2. Scroll down and practice fractions in the orange section of this page.
  3. Scroll down to the purple section of this page and play. How many questions can you answer in 60 seconds?

Final Activity:
Please create three fractions. Represent each fraction with numbers and shapes.
